The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Hellingly is the only remaining example in the County of a Church built on a circular Saxon mound (Ciric or cirque - the Anglo-Saxon word related to kirk and circus). The body of the Church is mainly 14th century with some earlier features such as the 13th century transitional wall and windows in the Chancel and one pier by the Lady Chapel, the even earlier palmate string line on both sides of the chancel and the Early English work in the Lady Chapel. The Tower is 1830's.
A short but comprehensive history is available in the church. This is frequently updated - please send along any suggestions!
The church is open for your use during daylight hours including a prayer corner, a library, children's activity tables and the small kitchen (sink but no cooker) and (disabled access) toilet. There is one step up into the Church, We welcome all who seek the peace of this holy place for prayer or thought but alos walkers, artists, photographers and other groups of visitors, We would be pleased to be given notice of group visits so we can help as much as possible. We have close neighbours, please respect them!
