The Lee Miller Archives was founded after the discovery of negatives in the attic at Farleys. This exhibition shows that discoveries are still being made. Curator Lance Downie has worked with the collections for over 12 years.
In More Light, he has selected the often unseen, overlooked or missed images from the Lee Miller Archives and The Penrose Collection.

“Bringing to light and awakening these sleeping images is the fruit of a decade’s discovery” says Downie. These pictures have, until now, been left cared for but dormant, undisturbed in the darkness of the Archives. This exhibition provides a celebration of Surrealism’s potential to make unexpected discoveries and it explores the fascination with, and creative power of, sleep and subsequent awakening. The show includes images of surreal masked figures, stunning landscapes, and highlights the eerie precision of Miller’s forensic photography of famous bedrooms (including Picasso’s). “It’s a huge privilege to share these remarkable images with the public for the first time.” Downie concludes.

Johnny White: Machinations

Sundays only: 1st April – 13th May 2018
Johnny White’s quirky & ingenious moving artworks manifest his love of animals & his interest in mythical creatures. All of Johnny’s sculptures are made using found or salvaged junk & encourage some element of audience participation or intervention.

Eileen Agar: Dreaming oneself awake

Sundays only: 20th May – 15th July 2018
Eileen Agar (1899-1991) studied painting at Byam Shaw, the Slade & in 1920 began receiving tuition from Leon Underwood at the Brook Green School of Art. Agar’s unique, personal style, led Paul Nash to suggest Roland Penrose & Herbert Read invite her to exhibit at the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition. This introduction began Agar’s lifelong friendship with Roland Penrose & Lee Miller.

Piers Metcalfe: Syrian Road

Sundays only: 22nd July – 9th September 2018
In 2008 Piers Metcalfe went on a road trip through the desert in Syria with his Syrian wife & their daughter. Piers took some hauntingly beautiful photographs of their travels with a plastic toy camera. Piers says about Syrian Road:
‘…it may be the fear that it could be a very long time before we can roam freely here again that make these pictures so important to me.’

Roger Penrose: Illustrated Mathematics

Sundays only: 16th September – 28th October 2018
Sir Roger Penrose OM FRS is Emeritus Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford. He has won many awards for his contribution to our understanding of general relativity, cosmology & the universe.
